It's kinda fun.
And you can get shiny pokemon from Mystery Gifting. Though, the code will only be redeemable on certain versions of the game. After a game update, the code will be rendered invalid. (Right now, you can get a shiny charmander).

In-game, they only have a .1% chance of appearing.

Playing through it right now, it is pretty damn fun.

And I'm pretty much stuck on Mt Moon 2.

Just level up your pokemon there. It doesn't matter if you lose, it's a great grinding spot.

Eventually, after a little while, you'll beat it.

The code for the charmander is in the description (had to say it because somehow, even when the video clearly states look at the description, some people were stupid enough to flame the guy who made the video about there being no code).

Also, beat the first Challenge Level and you will be rewarded with a shiny gold Geodude. Although those are probably common enough...
